Yes, it’s only Thursday but we all know by now that it takes some kind of miracle (or crash) to stop a Mercedes from winning these days. So why Nico Rosberg? Well Lewis Hamilton has confirmed that he’ll be getting an engine penalty for this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix and it could be a big one.
While Hamilton has managed to claw back the huge points gap on his teammate, he’s now feeling the pain from his early-season bad luck, having already used his fifth and final permitted turbo and MGU-H.
“We will be taking a penalty here this weekend,” said Hamilton. “I have no engines left.”
“Naturally we already discussed engine penalties before, that will come into play for sure but I will do everything I can to minimise the impact I have. Otherwise, beyond that penalty that I will eventually take, I think I will be able to continue with the momentum I had before the break.”
Mercedes are still unsure how big the penalty will be but replacing both the MGU-H and turbo would see Hamilton drop 20 places and therefore is likely to start from the pit lane.
